In 1986 the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF) are created under the umbrella of the Internet Architecture Board, which took over the functions of ICCC (Internet Configuration Control Board) in 1984.
IETF is an organisation dealing with the further technological development of the internet, in order to improve its functionality. Their main mission was – and still is – the preparation of high quality and technically relevant documents, which influence the way of how people advance, use and administrate the internet.
In contrast to the rather research oriented IRTF, IETF has to deal with the solving of short-term problems, especially the standardisation of the communication protocols used on the internet.
The first of the quarterly meetings was held in San Diego in January 1986. Only researchers of US-government departments were invited for this meeting. But at the fourth IETF meeting in October, representatives of commercial vendors were invited as well. Since that day all IETF meetings have been open to the public.
