BITNET
The Because It’s Time NETwork (BITNET), developed by Ira Fuchs at the City University of New York, started operations in 1981.
Technically it differs from the internet because it was based on the “store and forward” method for data Transmission. Information which is sent via an intermediate station like a router is stored and sent at a later date to the final target or another router.
One important function of BITNET was the access to calculating- and storage capacity of distant computers.

BITNET based one a consistent communication procedure, which was also used in computer networks such as EARN in Europe and NetNorth in Canada. Thus, a homogeneous global computer network evolved. At its peak in the early 1990’s about 3500 computers from 1400 different organisations communicated with each other.
