Mosaic for X
In early 1993 the Mosaic browser is developed at the National Center for Supercomputer Applications (NCSA). At that time Mosaic was the first internet browser, which could display text as well as graphics in a web site without loading them separately.

The development of Mosaic started as a project of the software group from NCSA at the University of Illinois, lead by Eric Bina and Marc Andreessen.The team adopted some details of already existing browsers. The buttons for the welcome page and the navigation came from the Viola browser, and bookmarks were adopted from the text-browser Lynx.
On April 21, Mosaic – the revolution for the www – was announced in the mailing list www-talk: "Version 1.0 of NCSA Mosaic for the X Window System, a networked information systems and World Wide Web browser, is hereby released". In late 1993 about two million copies of Mosaic were circulating. The name “Mosaic” quickly became a synonym for web browser.
With the release of Mosaic in 1993 a drastic change from the “old” to the “new” internet as we know it today has occurred.
