ARPANETand MILNET
During the course of changeover from NCP to TCP, and due to the fact that the network could freely expand from then on, the Defense Communications Agency (DCA) decided, that the ARPANET grew too big, which became a security issue. What could be done to make the so quickly grown network more secure?
DCA just split up the network into two partial networks. On the one hand there was MILNET, linking computers that stored non-secret military information; on the other hand ARPANET remained for the computer science community.

Before the split-up – due to security issues – the network consisted of 113 nodes. After the separation, only 45 nodes remained on the ARPANET. The remaining 68 nodes made up the new MILNET.
Now there existed two different operated and administrated networks, but since gateways still connected both networks the users didn’t realize the splitting. The old ARPANET had grown to an internet, and it continued to grow even bigger.
