University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) was established in 1909 and, by now, has its campus on a World War II marine base. Today students can choose between 100 bachelor programs and 50 master programs.

Heavy anti-war- demonstrations during the Vietnam War attracted the interest of the media. As a result armed guardsmen patrolling the campus became a common sight. About the same time, on the 1st of November to be exact, UCSB hooked up to the ARPANET as the third node. After the connection from University of Utah to the ARPANET was installed in December, the original first four nodes of the first computer network in history was completed.
