The Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) is a protocol used on Usenet. NNTP is specified in RFC 977 from February 1986, so Usenet messages could be transmitted using TCP/IP. Some upgrades of the standard protocol are specified in RFC 2980 from October 2000. The message structure is defined in RFC 1036 written in December 1987. The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) allocated TCP-port 119 to the protocol.
NNTP is text oriented and designed for the alternating client requests and the subsequent server response.
These responses contain a first line with a numeric status code – a three-digit integer, which informs about the success of the command – and further information, depending on the request. In some cases additional lines may follow, always terminated with a single dot.
The Network News Transfer Protocol finally allowed data exchange for Usenet-users via internet enabling the decentralization of Usenet.
