Chat, similar to e-mail, is communication device on the internet. In contrast to e-mail no messages have to be picked up from a server in order to read them in a chat, it’s rather a real-time system.
The user can enter and send off a message, which his chat partner can read immediately. His answer is then immediately transferred to the sender of the first message as well. Usually a chat client consists of a split window, a smaller one for writing messages and a larger window in which the conversation is displayed.
Over the years a real chatting language and chatting rules evolved. There are many emoticons (such as :), 8-) , :>, :-# or :D) and arrangements for example for the use of capitalized letters, which are very flashy and represent shouting. Thus, capitalized letters should only be used scarcely.
The classic form of chat is plain text chat, but meanwhile there are audio and video chats as well.
