Stanford Research Institute was established in1946 by Stanford University in Menlo Park, California. Today SRI International is a non-profit research institute, doing research for the government as well as for commercial companies. The main research areas of SRI include communication-, network- and computer technology as well as national security and defence. However the first research project at SRI was the exploration of a plant used for rubber production.
In 1970 SRI seperated from Stanford University, because anti-war-activists believed that the university would become part of the military-industrial complex due to the ARPA-funded work, and was renamed SRI International in 1977. About the same time Doug Engelbart, SRI employee and inventor of the computer mouse and other milestones in the computer industry.
set up the second node of the ARPANET on the 1st of October 1969, and received the first packet in the history of packet-switching October 29th , when Charley Kline tried to login on the SRI terminal. In 1977 SRI established the first wireless internet connection, similar to the more and more popular wireless LAN, which is often used today.
Further SRI achievements are for instance the development of the document preparation system LaTeX, which was written by Leslie Lamport in 1984, or the invention of the LCD monitor. LaTeX stands vor Lamport’s TeX and is often appreciated for writing scientific publications.
