The Information Processing Technology Office (IPTO) is an agency of ARPA, focusing on the development of new network, software and computer technology to guarantee the military predominance of the U.S. Department of Defense. Therefore IPTO oversees many different projects at the same time. It was the IPTO that worked on a communications and information network for the American military, after the Soviets launched the first satellite.
This concept was realised for the first time in 1969 with the installation of the first four nodes. The first electronic network – the ARPANET – was born.
In a current project called ITMANET (Information Theory for Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks), IPTO researchers are aiming at the development of new protocol ideas and new separating theories for mobile wireless networks.
